This rear seal is the original-rubber compound version of the crankshaft rear seal, preferred by rebuilders working on engines with lightly worn crankshaft flanges where a softer lip seats faster and seals more reliably. Replacing the rear seal is mandatory during any bottom-end rebuild and is the right time during clutch service to spend the extra labor. Skipping it leads to clutch oiling and torque converter staining.
